CBD Immune System Effects: Can CBD Boost Your Immune System?

Are you wondering about CBD immune system effects? Read this article to learn if CBD can boost your immune system or not.

What if we told you that CBD oil could make all your hopes and dreams come true?

We would be lying, or at the very least seriously exaggerating, but there is a growing body of research studying CBD immune system effects. In other words, does the use of CBD enhance your immune system’s abilities to fight off illness and keep you healthy?

If you have also found yourself wondering that very question, you’ve come to the right place. This is a general overview of what we know so far about CBD and the human immune system.

The Uses of CBD

If you are new to the CBD trend, there are a number of things people are now using CBD for.

Want to quit smoking? Recovering from a new tattooIs your dog experiencing joint pain?

People use CBD to reduce inflammation, lower anxiety, limit pain, improve sleep and so much more.

As you may already know, CBD comes from marijuana but does not contain THC. So, while there are benefits to using CBD, it does not have psychoactive effects.

While CBD may make you feel calm or relaxed, it will not give you the sensation of being “high” like traditional marijuana use.

How Does CBD Work?

Generally speaking, CBD can help balance the Endocannabinoid system (ECS).

What the heck does that mean?

Valid question.

The ECS already exists in our bodies and helps keep our body in homeostasis. Homeostasis is a fancy way to say that our bodies do what they can to stay in balance and keep systems and organs working correctly despite what is happening in our environment.

The ECS also is crucial because it allows cells in our body to signal and communicate.

The signals serve to tell our body when there may be a threat, like from a pathogen, which is basically any organism that can cause illness.

To avoid going too deep into the science, researchers know that the ECS regulates normal functions of daily life like sleep, appetite, memory, and even our mood.

CBD assists the ECS by preventing the endocannabinoids that are already in our bodies from breaking down to do its job even better and, therefore, may improve the functions mentioned above.

Immune System Overview

The immune system is made up of several structures in the body including our white blood cells, protective tissue, and organs like the spleen.

The immune system works to protect our health by identifying and fighting against the things that make us sick.

The bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens that our immune system works to combat come from sources outside the body. However, our immune system is also responsible for protecting us from things inside our body that are not working properly and therefore could make us sick.

This means that our immune system has the ability to detect and destroy those cells in our body that are not working properly.

Maintaining enough healthy cells and getting rid of unhealthy cells (those that can cause tumors) is a balancing act that most of our bodies can handle. But occasionally, the body needs extra help to keep those cells in check.

CBD Immune System Effects

You probably know someone or have heard about the use of cannabis to alleviate nausea from chemotherapy or the use of CBD to reduce arthritis pain. While these functions may make you feel better, this relates to symptoms of a condition, not your immune system

So, let’s dive deeper into the question of what CBD can do for already healthy individuals that want to boost their immune system.

CBD interacts with the ECS (remember the Endocannabinoid system from earlier?) to protect damaged cells in the body. More specifically, it acts upon particular receptors found in immune cells.

When you have a less than stellar immune system, your body will react to threats (foreign things it does not recognize like bacteria) using inflammation. Over time, this inflammation can be a risk factor for a disease.

CBD can prevent this inflammation from occurring, therefore, serving as a protective factor. In this way, CBD is classified as an immunosuppressant. It prevents the immune system from reacting with inflammation.

This is a simplistic explanation for a complex story, but the bottom line is that there is some evidence to show CBD may protect the immune system decreasing the likelihood of you getting sick.

CBD and Autoimmune Disease

In addition to the research being done about what CBD can do to boost an immune system, there are currently studies investigating the impact of CBD on individuals with autoimmune diseases like Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.

In these instances, CBD is still producing the desired effect on the immune system but in a different way.

With autoimmune diseases, the major issue is that the immune system is too active. CBD can help reduce that activity without totally shutting down the entire immune system.

While CBD is not approved to cure any autoimmune disorders, it may help reduce the severity of symptoms by interrupting the immune system from attacking other systems of the body.

The Bottom Line

There is still limited research on CBD immune system effects, but the preliminary findings are promising!
