What Does Science Have to Say?

In 2013, researchers from University College London conducted a study to determine whether the use of CBD can reduce the number of cigarettes consumed by smokers. In a group of 24 smokers, 12 patients were given an inhaler of CBD to use when they felt the urge to smoke, while the other 12 participants were given a placebo inhaler. 

Over the course of a week, those who had used the placebo inhalers showed no difference in the number of cigarettes they smoked, while those treated with CBD reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked by 40%. 

A 2018 study, also done by researchers at University College London, was performed to see if the use of CBD might decrease the feeling of needing a cigarette after a period of abstaining from smoking. 

Because many smokers associate certain behaviors – like waking up or drinking a cup of coffee – with smoking, the study wanted to see if using CBD could reduce those behavioral associations.

In this experiment, participants were either given an 800-mg dose of CBD or a placebo, after not smoking overnight. The study concluded that those who received the dose of CBD saw a reduction in the pleasant feeling that often accompanies cigarette cues.

These studies show that CBD oil may help reduce the urge to smoke and reduce the positive feelings smokers associate with having a cigarette.

Some smokers may worry that by using CBD oil to quit smoking, they’re exchanging one addictive substance for another. 

Fortunately, unlike nicotine, CBD oil is not an addictive substance. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that CBD is not addictive and it may be helpful to treat drug addiction beyond cigarettes, like opioid and cocaine addictions.

WHO also went as far as to say that CBD should not be placed under international drug control, as it does not present a potential for abuse or substance dependence.
