CBD Oil to Quit Smoking: Can It Help?

Are you wondering if you can use CBD oil to quit smoking? You may just be able to – get the information you need, here.

In the United States alone, the CDC estimates that there are over 34 million adults who smoke cigarettes. And, nearly 70% of all American smokers want to drop the habit completely.

Of course, the addictive nature of nicotine makes it incredibly difficult for smokers to quit.

While there’s no shortage of products on the market that claim to help smokers give up cigarettes completely, many are now turning to CBD oil to help them kick their smoking habit.

Keep reading to learn more about why you should consider CBD oil to quit smoking.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (or CBD) oil is a chemical compound derived from cannabis and is naturally found in marijuana.

While it does not create a “high” effect or any other type of intoxication, it’s been found to provide health benefits, such as pain relief and reduced anxiety in some patients.

CBD oil can be ingested in a number of different ways, including:

  • Swallowing or ingesting the oil
  • Consuming it in food or drinks
  • Ingesting it by vaping
  • Rubbing it on your skin

Is Using CBD Oil Legal?

Because it is found in marijuana, many people wonder if using CBD oil is legal in their area, especially if they live in a state that has not yet legalized medical or recreational marijuana.

Good news! CBD oil is legal in all 50 states, as long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC. However, some states have more restrictions than others, so it’s best to look at your state’s CBD laws before purchasing it.

Using CBD Oil to Quit Smoking

CBD oil is known to have some health benefits. Scientists have even begun to test CBD oil’s effectiveness in helping people quit smoking.

What Does Science Have to Say?

In 2013, researchers from University College London conducted a study to determine whether the use of CBD can reduce the number of cigarettes consumed by smokers. In a group of 24 smokers, 12 patients were given an inhaler of CBD to use when they felt the urge to smoke, while the other 12 participants were given a placebo inhaler.

Over the course of a week, those who had used the placebo inhalers showed no difference in the number of cigarettes they smoked, while those treated with CBD reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked by 40%.

A 2018 study, also done by researchers at University College London, was performed to see if the use of CBD might decrease the feeling of needing a cigarette after a period of abstaining from smoking.

Because many smokers associate certain behaviors – like waking up or drinking a cup of coffee – with smoking, the study wanted to see if using CBD could reduce those behavioral associations.

In this experiment, participants were either given an 800-mg dose of CBD or a placebo, after not smoking overnight. The study concluded that those who received the dose of CBD saw a reduction in the pleasant feeling that often accompanies cigarette cues.

These studies show that CBD oil may help reduce the urge to smoke and reduce the positive feelings smokers associate with having a cigarette.

Other Ways That CBD Oil May Help You Quit Smoking

In addition to the results of the studies above, there are other reasons to believe that CBD oil can help you break your cigarette addiction. Here are a few of the other ways that CBD oil may be helpful in your journey to break up with cigarettes for good.

CBD Oil May Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Many smokers reach for a cigarette more often when their stress levels are high. Using CBD oil can allow you to relax and unwind, leaving you feeling less stressed overall.

This means you may find yourself reaching for a cigarette less often just because your stress levels are lower. Or, you might try using CBD oil when you feel the urge to smoke, which can help you replace your smoking habit with a healthier alternative.

CBD Oil May Make Nicotine Withdrawal Easier to Handle

When you smoke, the nicotine in your cigarette can trigger the receptors in your brain to release serotonin. This is what your brain associates with feelings of well-being and happiness, so, over time, your body starts to associate cigarettes with happiness.

While CBD oil doesn’t necessarily increase serotonin levels in your brain, some research shows that CBD can affect how your brain responds to serotonin that already exists in your system.

As a result, using CBD oil may mean that your brain is more receptive to the serotonin, which reduces the need for a cigarette to further boost serotonin levels.

Is CBD Oil Addictive?

Some smokers may worry that by using CBD oil to quit smoking, they’re exchanging one addictive substance for another.

Fortunately, unlike nicotine, CBD oil is not an addictive substance. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that CBD is not addictive and it may be helpful to treat drug addiction beyond cigarettes, like opioid and cocaine addictions.

WHO also went as far as to say that CBD should not be placed under international drug control, as it does not present a potential for abuse or substance dependence.
